Case Study 2 – Funky and friendly

Brief
Our client operated as a nanny from home so child safety was a key part of the brief. She was also a real fan of vibrant colour and wanted to create a kitchen that would have a really funky feel. The existing kitchen was a narrow galley in an extension at the back of a Victorian house. There was no worktop space; none of the appliances matched and the boiler was on display for all to see.  Our brief was to create a fun kitchen that would work as part of a functioning nursery and relaxing space for her and her partner at the end of the day.

Design Solution
Our designers felt that the best use of the space would be to open up the wall between the kitchen and the dining room. This would provide masses of space, let more light into the kitchen, enable a more functional design and ensure that our client was in contact with the children in her care at all times. A combination of white gloss cabinets with a granite ‘milky way’ work surface and splashback were used to create contrast. Red was applied as an accent colour on the walls and accessories to meet with the clients brief for vibrant colour whilst creating a kitchen that would appeal to potential buyers in the future. A circular peninsular was designed with an elm worksurface to provide a seating area. Its rounded edges made it a safe and functional space for children to sit and play in the day. Draw locks and a bleach cage were also included and the use of engineered wood in the dining area and porcelain flooring in the kitchen created a dividing line which enabled the client to control child access to the kitchen space. Underfloor heating and wall mounted vertical radiators were a space saving and child friendly addition to the room. The new patio doors opening onto the sun deck provided a place to relax after a hard days work.
