Case Study 2 – Radiant and Eco Friendly
Brief
Our clients an American couple, had recently moved to the UK. Their basement
galley kitchen ‘almost a corridor’ had no light and was an extremely awkward
space to cook within. There were doors coming off pretty much every free
wall space and the back wall was curved round to an internal window between
the hall and the kitchen. Our brief was to open up the space and
create a functional eco friendly kitchen for a cooking mad couple.
Design Solution
Our design and building teams worked together to come up with an ingenious
design that would open up the space, provide a source of natural light
and allow direct access to the garden that had previously been approached
via a long and winding corridor. We created a door onto the garden where
an internal window had once been and incorporated a study behind the curved
wall moving the internal hallway to make maximum use of the avaliable space.
Our clients needed help with the overall styling and eventually settled
on a shaker style kitchen with a deco inspired theme. Wooden work surfaces
were used throughout to give warmth and tiles were laid horizontally and
the back wall painted dark red to give the illusion of width. Underfloor
heating was used to store heat and release it slowly into the room and
a recycling bin with an integrated kick plate was installed for ease of
use.
