Pros and Cons of Timber
Solid hardwood kitchen worktops have a natural beauty and warmth that is hard to beat. They are made from many different species of trees, including Beech, Birch, Oak, Iroko, Maple, Walnut, Cherry & Teak and these can be combined together to give many varied and unique designs. This makes them extremely versatile, and therefore suited to both traditional and contemporary kitchens. At Urbane, we only use solid wood worktops from sustainable sources - see our eco section of the website for more information.
Timber worktops:
- Are hardwearing and long lasting and will gain in character over time, becoming richer and deeper in colour. Scratches and other marks
- Can easily be sanded to remove scratches and other marks
- Are extremely hygienic as they are naturally antibacterial
- Are very heat-resistant if they have been maintained properly.
Hardwood worktops are made from a living material, which of course adds to their unique charm; however this means they need higher maintenance than other products. They require regular seasoning with a high quality oil. Wood contracts and expands according to the humidity levels and can bow if exposed to differing moisture levels. However turning the worktop over and allowing it to rest can remedy this.
Care and Maintenance of Timber
Initially the workshops should be allowed to adjust to the humidity of the room they will be installed into for a few days. It is important to keep away from radiators at this time. They should be treated on all edges and surfaces several times with a high quality Danish oil or Hab oil, and sanded lightly in between coats. This should prevent ‘blowing’ which is where the worktops expands where is has absorbed water.
After installation they should be oiled again twice and then regularly after in order to ensure that the surface remains sealed and water repellent and cleaned after use with mild soap and water. The fitter will leave gaps around the worktop for natural expansion and movement.
