Pros and Cons of Granite
Granite was formed hundreds of millions of years ago from cooling magma
in the Earth’s crust. Nowadays it is quarried, cut to size and polished
to give a very smooth, high shine and extremely tough surface that comes
in a wonderful variety of mottled colours and natural patterns. People
who have a granite worktop love them for their beauty and durability.
Granite worktops:
- Will retain their colour and are one of the most hardwearing and practical options available
- Take little maintenance, always looks fabulous and has bags of style and quality.
- Buff up to a beautiful sheen
- Are heat resistant which means you can put hot dishes straight from the oven onto them.
- Are waterproof and largely maintenance free.
However, they can be expensive and are tricky to install, which means you should always use an experienced fitter. Spillages of fruit juice, particularly lemon, wine and vinegar must be wiped up immediately as acidic substances are corrosive to granite and will stain. They can be streaky after wiping down if you don’t use a proprietary cleaner. They may need resealing after two or three years.
Care and Maintenance of Granite
Granite is one of the easiest surfaces to maintain and, with the right care, will stay looking new for years. Cleaning is best done using a few drops of a neutral cleaner or mild detergent (PH7), stone soap or a cleaner specifically made for stone surfaces. Dry with a chamois or e-cloth and buff to a beautiful shine. Strong detergents can dull the polished finish and harsh abrasive cleaners should never be used.
